Exploring Offshore Winds: Meet NSG’s BRAVO 2.0

Discover how NSG is revolutionizing meteorological assessment for ISI-ER and Petrobras!

Since 2022, NSG’s team of engineers has been working on the project of a Remote Offshore Wind Assessment Buoy, the BRAVO 2.0. This equipment, developed by ISI-ER for Petrobras, promises to transform the wind energy industry by providing crucial data on winds.

BRAVO 2.0 is also capable of capturing meteorological variables such as atmospheric pressure, air temperature, and relative humidity, as well as variables related to waves and ocean currents. These data are useful for determining the potential of an area for wind energy production.

COMPLEX CHALLENGES: DESIGNING BRAVO 2.0

At the project’s initiation, NSG faced the significant challenge of developing an intelligent solution to meet Petrobras’ specific requirements. It was necessary to create a robust and durable piece of equipment capable of accurately measuring wind speed and direction, generating data compatible with the operational environment of wind turbines.

Moreover, the deployment conditions of BRAVO 2.0 required the equipment’s structure to have good stability and flotation. Ensuring appropriate measures and weight for support at sea, regardless of temperature and hydrostatic pressure variations, was crucial. Another challenge faced by NSG was defining the project’s structure to ensure the equipment’s durability and strength.

NAVIGATING THROUGH BRAVO 2.0’S TECHNICAL FEATURES

BRAVO 2.0 was conceived with exceptional technical details. With a circular hull shape, NSG aimed to ensure symmetry and durability, minimizing potential structural issues in the future.

Stability, structure, hydrodynamics, and anchoring were meticulously evaluated using tools like SESAM HydroD and finite element models utilizing SESAM GeniE.

Each project stage underwent rigorous testing, ensuring compliance with international standards.

PROMISING TESTS AND NEXT STEPS

Although still in the testing phase, BRAVO 2.0 already shows its potential. Located approximately 15 km off the coast of Areia Branca, Rio Grande do Norte, the buoy actively contributes to the competitiveness of the Brazilian industry. Its promising results could mean a revolution in offshore wind potential measurement in Brazil.

The next steps for BRAVO 2.0 include completing the testing phase and determining its technological readiness. Petrobras anticipates a significant reduction in offshore wind measurement costs, highlighting the potential of BRAVO 2.0 to increase service offerings and reduce implementation costs for offshore wind projects in the country.

BRAVO 2.0 is not just a technical innovation; it is a key component in positioning Brazil as a global competitor in offshore wind energy. By offering a nationally viable solution aligned with sustainability goals, NSG and Petrobras collaborate to strengthen the Brazilian industry and reduce dependence on imported technologies.

NSG COMMITMENT: EXCELLENCE IN NAVAL AND OFFSHORE ENGINEERING

NSG reaffirms its commitment to excellence in naval and offshore engineering. Facing challenges with precision, the company seeks safer, more economical, and agile solutions. BRAVO 2.0 is living proof of this commitment, representing a significant milestone in national technological innovation.
